Network Americana

Americana: Aesthetics, Authenticity and Performance in US Popular Music (Scientific Network)

The network, funded by the DFG for a period of three years, brings together scientists from the fields of musicology and American studies who want to make an interdisciplinary contribution to the study of American popular music. It tries to work out the specifics of American music along three lines of investigation: aesthetics (formal, stylistic elements), authenticity (in the form of appearing as real artistic identities) and performance (concrete performance contexts and everyday practices).

As a starting point, the term "Americana" used for the music genre of the same name should be taken up, problematised according to the three aspects mentioned above and used for the study of other popular music styles and genres in the USA. The aim is to investigate to what extent they are staging their music as 'typically American' and thus possibly commenting, questioning or even distancing themselves from a general discourse of the 'American'.

The workshops should give the opportunity to present the topics proposed by the participants in an interdisciplinary research context, i.a. to discuss with well-known guests, to find common topics and to formulate questions that are elaborated in an interdisciplinary co-authorship. The research results of the network will be presented at a final conference and subsequently published in an anthology.
